How far can you read?👀
Hello everyone!
Nina from Fujiyoshida JES here! How have you been?
The rainy season has completely arrived, and the stifling summer heat continues all over Japan. That being said, Fujiyoshida feels like the exception! We’ve certainly had some more sun and rain, along with warmer days, but the evenings still get chilly and windy enough, so I really can’t complain (haha).
But it’s June on the calendar and Summer means Sea, Sun, Sand, Swimming… All words that start with S! The heart wants what it wants, and my heart wanted the sea. So, I took my sister and my friends, and we spent 4 days in Kawazu, Izu Peninsula. Now, at this point, you may think “Izu again!?” and yes; Izu again. I have to admit, for all that I’ve travelled Japan and seen many a beautiful sight, Izu takes a very honorable #2 spot in my heart (right after Fujiyoshida in #1), so the decision for where exactly to spend a long weekend summer trip was easy to make.
Instead of breaking each day down, I’m just going to share some of the highlights. Starting with the sea, naturally! We were very lucky that with the exception of one day, there was almost no rain, and we got to swim and enjoy our time at the beach. The water was the perfect temperature, and we got to swim in the waves and in the still waters, so we definitely got our fill.

The second highlight of the trip was the Hydrangea festival in Shimoda. The beautiful, vibrant flowers, the many varieties in color and shape – all of it had a magical, almost surreal feel to it. There was plenty to see and take photos off, but also just simply enjoy existing surrounded by the colors and scents of summer. Naturally, we couldn’t help but mimic some of the statues, but there was multiple that were simply impossible to mimic (haha).

The final highlight of this particular trip was the Atagawa Banana Crocodile Garden. Despite having an idea of what the place was like simply from the name alone, nothing could have prepared us for the astonishing size of the crocodiles and alligators and just how close they were. There were so many types and species there, that it went beyond any and every expectation I had. Additionally, beyond the crocodiles, the Garden offers so much more on display – parrots, red pandas, tropical birds, a variety of amphibians and some of the most unique greenhouses I’ve ever seen! It was truly incredible!

There’s a lot to love about summer and there’s a lot to enjoy, and I cannot be anymore happier about this trip – it was only 4 days, but it was plenty to rest and refresh before getting back into the swing of work. I hope that everyone takes some time to relax this summer and enjoy the delights.

Beyond anything, I think that it’s important for people to know multiple languages. Now, this might seem like it’s coming out of nowhere, but the truth is, Jap
an has been my dream since I was in elementary school. Learning Japanese helped make that a reality and expand my horizons, my life, my limits. I can only wish the same for our students – you never know how knowledge is going to change your life and, maybe, in 10-20 years, you’ll find yourself in the same place as me – living what used to be only a dream.
As teachers, not only do I hope our students can hear words like this from us, but also, I want to show it to them. The world is limitless and the opportunities are endless, as long as you come with the right tools to break down the barriers – language barriers included.
With that said, Nina out!
Nina
