That time of the year is once more here – after a long Winter we are greeted with songbirds rousing from their sleep and blooms all around! The first signs of Spring here in Yamanashi are the beautiful sakura blooms surrounding Chureito Pagoda and the Arakurayama Sengen Shrine. The blooms are clearly visible from Mt. Fuji Station, despite the distance, and the area is bathed in a pastel pink. People from all over the world gather to see them in our beautiful town of Fujiyoshida!<\/p>\n

When it comes to my personal experience with the lovely scenery seen from the viewing platform near Chureito pagoda, I can sincerely say that such a lovely view is must-see at least once in life. Together with my sister, we woke early in the morning, just after sunrise – when the sun is not yet at it’s peak and the Spring warmth is settling in the air. The pleasant breeze woke us up as we walked from Shimoyoshida station to the entrance of the mountain and, even at 6AM on a Saturday morning, the crowds of people all trek up the stairs for the best view in the world. The scent of pine forrests in the surrounding area is highlighted with the dew that settles on the leaves and it has a calming effect on us as we make our way up the 398 stairs to the pagoda.<\/p>\n

As we walk, we stop near every small shrine, near every bloom, just to enjoy the breath of Spring and the pleasant atmosphere. There is no rush to make it to the top, lest we miss the sunrise, and what would’ve been a taxing exercise becomes a stroll through nature. Once we reach the peak, we take the photos that we came for initially, but remain at the park for a while longer, enjoying the early morning atmosphere.<\/p>\n

The way down is much easier than the way up, but we get to see small details we had missed going up. More wild flowers and narcissuses blooming, more people waking up to open their local businesses. There is a sense of community and joy that Spring has finally arrived in full bloom. As we return to Shimoyoshida station, we are lured in with the sweet scent of fried dough and red bean paste – fresh Taiyaki. We get some, unable to resist, and lounge in a seating area that provides a view of Mt. Fuji to the right, Chureito and the sakuras to the left.<\/p>\n

Personally, there is no better time to experience Chureito and the surrounding sakuras. With the flowers now having reached full bloom, there is only a limited time left before that delicate pink leaves us till next year, but even that ushers in a new experience. With the sakura season almost to an end, the vibrant peach blossoms will come into full bloom and fill Yamanashi with their stunning pink. I, for one, cannot wait to see them. So much to see in Spring, so much to do – and it never gets old.<\/p>\n
